Man Shot Dead By Police In Lake Macquarie

Police have launched a critical incident investigation following the shooting death of a man in the Lake Macquarie region on Thursday.

Officers shot dead Tafari Walton, 21, at a home in Vena Street, Glendale who was wanted over the stabbing death of a 27-year-old woman.

Police said officers confronted Walton at a home in Vena Street, Glendale, just before 9am on Thursday. They allege he threatened them with a knife, which is when he was shot by police.

Walton died at the scene.

As is protocol, a Critical Incident Team will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.

On Wednesday, police had issued a statement asking the public to be on alert for Walton after a 27-year-old woman was found suffering stab sounds at a home on Stephens Avenue.

"She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunted Hospital, where she died," police said.

Photos of Walton and a car similar to one investigators believe he may have been driving were shared by police on Facebook, but the post has since been deleted.

Police had urged the public not to approach Walton if spotted, but to instead call Triple Zero.
