Mystery Behind Motive Of Attack On 92-Year-Old
A young female cleaner has spent the night in jail after allegedly stabbing her 92-year-old client three times in her Sydney home.
Hanny Papanicolaou was charged with attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following the alleged attack on Marjorie Welsh in Ashbury on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old woman is understood to have worked as a cleaner at the home for the past 12 months, though Superintendent David Johnson said any motive remains unclear.
A neighbour heard Welsh crying for help before rushing to her aid on Wednesday morning.
"I had seen an old lady face down with blood all over the back of her head," he told 10 News First.
Emergency services quickly followed after Welsh activated a personal panic alarm she was wearing about 10.45am.
"I'm sure that that device assisted to save that victim's life," Spt Johnson said.
Welsh was bleeding heavily from her scalp and abdomen, with court documents later revealing she was stabbed three times with a knife.
“Police were quick to assist the victim, who was conscious at the time and was able to give the police certain information," Spt Johnson said.
A police radio check helped officers to track her alleged attacker to a street in Illawong some 20 kilometres away, arresting her a short time later.
Papanicolaou will remain behind bars for at least a week but indicated in court on Thursday she would seek bail during her next court appearance on January 9.
As of Thursday evening, the victim was in an induced coma at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and required further surgery.
10 daily has contacted the hospital for an update on her condition on Friday morning.
