Police Left Shattered After Dog Dies Saving Their Lives

It was on Christmas Eve that the three-year-old police dog Cigo was shot dead while protecting his fellow officers.

During a press conference following Cigo's death Sheriff Ric Bradshaw detailed the extent of the beautiful dog's heroic actions.

A tactical team was watching two suspects in a shopping centre in Florida, who were wanted for attempted murder.

The team were going to apprehend the suspects before they entered their vehicle, in the parking lot outside the shopping centre, away from civilians.

According to police as suspects approached the middle of the parking lot the team moved in and while one suspect surrendered another took off.

It was then K9 Cigo was deployed to stop the suspect, who then turned and shot at deputies multiple times, shooting K9 Cigo. Two deputies returned fire striking the suspect.

According to the sheriff, even while shot Cigo continued to chase the shooter.

K9 Cigo was transported to a local animal hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"He did his job and saved those deputies’ lives," Sheriff Bradshaw said.

In several emotional posts on the department's social media, the entire department can be seen mourning the much-loved K9.

"Our hearts are truly broken after a suspect shot and killed our K9 dog tonight, on Christmas Eve," read a tweet from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Cigo's handler/partner was consoled by multiple police officers were bought to tears and sobbed in each other's arms as they consoled each other over the death of one of their own.
