Man Fronts Court Over Alleged Sexual Assault Of Young Mother

The man has been identified as Zynal Javid Khan.

A man accused of stalking a young mother and sexually assaulting her as she walked home in Melbourne five years ago is due to reappear in court.

Zynal Javid Khan, 34, made a brief appearance in Melbourne Magistrates on Wednesday night, shortly after he was arrested over the 2013 attack.

He was picked up at a property in Resevoir, and charged with one count of rape and one count of intentionally causing injury.

It comes less than two weeks after the woman, now 27, came forward to tell her story, as detectives offered a $500,000 reward to help find her alleged attacker.

Khan is accused of stalking the then 22-year-old as she walked home from the city along King Street on June 30, 2013, before grabbing her from behind and dragging her into a lane.

Police allege he then punched and kicked her in the head several times before sexually assaulting her.

The woman had a seven-week-old son at the time and said it was her first night our with friends since giving birth.

"As much as it damaged me, I think it damaged me and my son's relationship," she said.

Khan did not apply for bail in an out-of-session hearing on Wednesday night and is expected to reappear in court on Thursday for a formal hearing.

A 37-year-old woman who was also arrested at the property is expected to be interviewed over perjury and false allibi offences.
