What you need to know
- The woman was standing on the corner of Lygon Street, when she was picked up by a vehicle at about 4.30am on Sunday morning.
- Police are appealing for four males who were captured on CCTV footage in the vicinity to come forward as witnesses.
- The alleged attack occurred just two kilometres from where Eurydice Dixon was allegedly raped and murdered four days earlier.
A woman has been sexually assaulted in Melbourne's inner north just four days after Eurydice Dixon was allegedly raped and murdered about two kilometres away.
The woman and her friend, both aged in their 30s, caught a taxi from Melbourne's CBD to Lygon Streeet near Grattan Street after 4am on Sunday before getting out and one went into a convenience store.
The other woman stayed on the opposite corner before she was picked up in a vehicle about 4.30am and sexually assaulted in an unknown location, police say.
"We then believe the victim was taking via a vehicle from Carlton to her vicinity of her home in the northern suburbs of Melbourne," said Detective inspector Steve Wilson at a media conference.
"Somewhere along that journey we believe she was sexually assaulted by one or more persons, we don't know at this stage how many."
She went to her northern suburbs home after the incident about 5.30am and phoned police.
The woman had been wearing a long cardigan, black top and skirt, and her friend wore a black leather jacket and pink top.
"We are very keen to have any witness, any person who was in that vicinity to come forward," Wilson said.
Detectives are still trying to piece together the circumstances and the victim's movements.
Police have released vision of a silver ute and three men they are urging to come forward, who police say are being treated as witnesses at this stage.
"I would just like to stress at this point, that we are looking to these three people as witnesses only, and we are very keen to speak them in relation to what they saw," Wilson said.
There is also another man captured walking past police also want to hear from.
"It's enormously concerning whenever someone is sexually assaulted, however I understand that this will be particularly worrying for people who live around that area given recent events," Wilson said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
"I want to reassure the community that we are doing absolutely everything we can to identify those responsible for this matter.
"People have the right to go out at night and enjoy themselves in our city - for a young woman's night to end this way is absolutely unacceptable."
It comes just days after Eurydice Dixon was allegedly raped and murdered in Princes Park on the night of June 12, after returning from performing at Melbourne's Highlander Bar.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or unusual around Lygon or Grattan streets about 4.30am on Sunday is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 .
