A country doctor has been charged with sexual offences against multiple female patients at a regional Victorian clinic.
The 68-year-old man is accused of conducting a female health test on a patient at Wangaratta's Ely Street Clinic without the use of surgical gloves in October, before police allegedly discovered inappropriate images of multiple female patients on his camera and computer.
The GP was last year suspended from practising medicine and on Monday was charged with sexual assault and the capture of intimate images.
The investigation was sparked after one of his alleged victims noticed camera equipment during the female health test and went to police, who informed the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
Police say additional victims were identified following a forensic examination of electronics from the GP's home, with date and time stamps cross-checked against appointment records.
The victims are all women and are being contacted this week, police say.
"It is likely that there are other victims who, again, may be unaware the offence has occurred," Acting Superintendent Joy Arbuthnot said in a statement on Tuesday.
There is no evidence any other doctor or staff member at the clinic was involved, police said.
They called on women who noticed "anything unusual about their interaction" with the GP to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The doctor has been bailed to appear in the Wangaratta Magistrates Court on September 10 and the Ely Street Clinic has been contacted for comment.
