'We Are Devastated': Toddler Found Dead In Minibus Outside Queensland School
A three-year-old boy has been found dead inside a bus belonging to his daycare centre.
Queensland Police said the young boy was found inside the vehicle at 3:15 pm at a school on Stokes St in Edmonton.
It's believed the boy was found outside of Hambledon State School.
Detective Inspector Jason Smith told reporters that police believe the child was supposed to have been delivered to a daycare centre earlier that day.
"We are trying to work out exactly what's happened between now and when he should have been delivered to the daycare centre," he said.
It's unclear how long the boy was on the bus before he was discovered by the vehicle's driver, however, the temperature in Cairns reached a high of 34C on Tuesday.
"A number of factors could be at play here and we will investigate all possibilities," Smith said on Tuesday.
"Cairns detectives from the Child Protection Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident," police also said in a statement.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Goodstart Early Learning said it was "devastated by the death of a child in our care in Cairns."
"We are working to support the entire centre team, our families and our children," the organisation said.
"The matter is now a police investigation and we will be working with the police, Department of Education (childhood education and care), and Workplace health and Safety."
"Our thoughts are very much with the family of the child at this time."
Police said the boy's mother has been notified and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
More to come.
