Man Found Dead On Beach After Allegedly Drinking With Friends

A 28-year-old man who was found dead on a Wollongong beach south of Sydney is believed to have have gone for a midnight swim after drinking with friends.

Officers were called to Cliff Road at 6.15am on Tuesday after a man's body was found on North Wollongong Beach by early-morning walkers.

The Illawarra man has yet to be formally identified, NSW Police told reporters on Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Darren Brown said after speaking with Surf Life Saving it's clear the conditions were "hazardous", with storm warnings issued on Monday.

The man’s personal belongings were located on the beach earlier today.

Authorities are not treating the death as suspicious and believe it may have been a drowning incident.

More to come.
