Australia Welcomes 2020 With A Bang

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Australia's largest capital cities to celebrate New Year's Eve and ring in 2020, with the country's ongoing bushfire crisis not far from their minds.

Sydney

One of Sydney's most controversial New Year's Eve fireworks displays went off without a hitch.

Light and colour exploded over the heads of adoring crowds lining the city's harbour as Aboriginal electronic duo Electric Fields -- using Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and English - led off an all-Australian playlist.

Comets, mines, and crossettes reflected off the waters from high above as Kate Miller-Heidke's Zero Gravity followed Tones and I's monster hit Dance Monkey.

Almost $1 million was raised for communities struggling with bushfires and drought.

The city council said New Year's Eve 2019 would help raise funds for the Salvation Army Emergency Services responding to bushfires in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Western Australia.

Brisbane

Tens of thousands of people have lined the Brisbane River to watch the early New Year's Eve fireworks display.

The crowds came into the city to watch that start of what was tipped to be Brisbane's biggest ever New Year's Eve celebration.

Nine firework-loaded barges on the river provided spectacular shows for crowds gathered at top spots like South Bank, Eagle Street, Howards Smith Wharves, Portside Wharf and Toowong.

Adelaide

Meanwhile in Adelaide, things almost took a disastrous turn when a section of the Torrens Riverbank caught alight during the 9pm fireworks.

Thousands of people were gathered on the eastern bank of Rymill Park when the section of grassland burst into flames and quickly spread metres into the air.

The fire break was quickly extinguished, to rounds of applause, before the evening's host Tom Rhen delivered a tribute to the country's firefighters.
