Graves Damaged After Car Crashes Into Sydney Burial Ground

A number of graves at a Muslim burial ground in Sydney's west have been damaged after a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Rookwood Cemetery on Friday afternoon.

Police said the driver was trapped in his vehicle for a short time before being released by emergency services.

The incident occurred at Rookwood Cemetery's Muslim Burial Ground (Muslim section 1 to 6) at around 1 pm on Friday, after the car crashed into the cemetery before rolling onto several graves.

Photos shared to local social media group Auburn 2144 showed a silver car that had tipped on its side over several allotments.

The area has now been taped off as police begin work to remove the vehicle.

Rookwood Cemetery released a statement on Friday evening saying there were no major injuries to the driver or witnesses, however, a number of allotments were damaged in the incident.

The cemetery said it would now begin working on identifying and contacting the families whose monuments were affected.

"As a part of this process, we will assess the extent of the damage and will be doing everything we can to support the families involved."

Police have told 10 daily the incident is being treated as an accident.
