Sydney Moves On Melbourne As World's Most Liveable City
In controversial news that will add fuel to the partisan fire, Sydney appears to be closing in on Melbourne as the world's most liveable city.
According to this year's Global Liveability Report, compiled by The Economist Intelligence Unit, Melbourne is trailing Vienna for top spot for the second year running.
But the biggest mover is Sydney, which has moved up from fifth to third place, followed by Osaka and Calgary.
Adelaide is the other Australian city in the top 10.
The annual survey of 140 countries assesses which cities provide the best or worst living conditions based on five categories: stability -- which includes crime and threat of terror -- healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
Each factor is marked as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.
Over the past year, the average scores for 'stability' rose, reflecting a "slight diminishing of the perceived threat of terrorism", according to the survey.
Melbourne, however, dropped the most points for stability while maintaining high scores for healthcare, education, infrastructure, culture and environment.
The index attributed Sydney's rise to improvement in its culture and environment score, thanks to the city's Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy and its "commitment to sustainability and climate action".
Vienna was awarded "near, perfect, exceptional scores" in four of the five categories.
Overall, the index remains dominated by medium-sized cities in developed countries, with London and New York ranked 48th and 58th.
It comes after a separate survey of over 1,300 Aussies concluded Australia simply isn't a fun country -- a surprising finding for many when 10 Daily took to the streets. (Check out the video above for more).
