Jockey Killed In Tragic Accident Named

A jockey who died after falling from a horse at a Melbourne racecourse has been identified as Mikaela Claridge.

The 22-year-old fell while riding at a Cranbourne racecourse about 4.35am on Friday, police said.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious and WorkSafe is investigating. There were no other riders involved.

According to Racing Victoria, Claridge was 'dislodged' from her horse while riding in the sand trails at 4.35am. On-course paramedics could not save her.

She had come back from a back injury in 2017 and made her riding debut in 2018. She won 28 races in her career.

Trackwork at the Cranbourne Training Centre was closed following the incident.

"It is with great sadness that Racing Victoria (RV) confirms that a female jockey has tragically passed away following an incident at the Cranbourne Training Centre this morning," Racing Victoria said in a statement.

“Mikaela was a talented young rider who was pursuing a career in the sport she loved. She was a much loved and valuable member of the racing community and her sad passing is being felt by many within our industry today,” Racing Victoria Chief Executive Giles Thompson said.

According to her social media profile, the young jockey from Yulecart Victoria had only recently gotten married.
