Asylum Seeker Flown From Nauru To Australia After Self-Harm Incident

A Pakistani man who set himself on fire while in a detention centre on Nauru is in intensive care at a Queensland hospital, advocates say.

The man, known as Jamal, 36, was flown to Brisbane from the remote Micronesian island on Saturday after harming himself on Friday.

Refugee advocates say they are concerned for his welfare because the government has not issued a statement about the his condition.

The Refugee Action Coalition's Ian Rintoul said there has been no official reports about Jamal's condition.

Rintoul said unconfirmed reports suggested he was critical before being flown from the island about 3,000 km from Brisbane.

He said detainees are badly affected by the government strategy.

"Jamal is another casualty of Australia's offshore detention policy," Rintoul said.

"They have lost hope."
