Thousands In $50 Bills Found Floating Down River

Police have seized a large sum of cash found floating lazily down a river, and are now trying to figure out where it came from.

NSW Police were alerted to the unusual waterway debris on Monday morning, after a member of the public -- thought to be a young boy -- spotted the $50 bank notes floating down Mullet Creek at Dapto, south of Wollongong.

He snapped a photo and sent it to a family member, who in turn called the cops.

Police, Fire and State Emergency Service crews went to the scene to witness the strange find, then using nets and an inflatable boat to retrieve the cash from the water.

Police did not release a total value of the notes recovered, but pictures from the scene show several hundred dollars alone floating in the river, and a number of notes collected by authorities -- potentially thousands of dollars in total.

Authorities are now working to ascertain whether the cash is authentic or counterfeit.

"Police inquiries are continuing," NSW Police said in a statement.
