Missing Mum's Body Found After Birthday Plane Ride Ends In Double Tragedy
Police have found a body in the search for a Queensland mother after a vintage plane crashed during a joy flight to celebrate her birthday.
Trista Applebee, 31, was on a scenic flight with pilot Marcel van Hattem, 52, when the Soviet-era Yak 52 crashed into the sea off the Gold Coast on Wednesday.
van Hattem's body was found on Thursday afternoon.
Police on Friday night said they had found a woman's body at a beach at North Stradbroke Island.
"Police believe the woman to be the 31-year-old passenger from the Yak 52 aircraft that failed to return from a flight that departed a Coombabah airfield," a statement said.
The aircraft was the same model plane that crashed in a similar location in 2008, claiming two lives.
The Yak 52 is a training aircraft often used for aerobatics and scenic flights.
Applebee’s boyfriend raised the alarm after waiting for her in vain at the Southport Flying Club on Wednesday when the plane failed to return from what was meant to be a 30-minute scenic flight.
Applbee is survived by her 11-year-old daughter.
An extensive air and water search has now ended.
