Worksite Tragedy As Man Killed In Garbage Dump Accident

One man is dead and another is in hospital after a rubbish accident at a Sydney landfill site.

Emergency services arrived at the Eastern Creek work site about 12:45pm on Monday.

A rescue operation and "frantic search" commenced for two men trapped under material at the western Sydney worksite, after the alarm was raised on Monday afternoon.

One man was trapped under two metres of loose rubbish and debris. It took 15 minutes for a team of 30 people to locate the man, said to be in his 40s, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The men were said to have been struck with a bulldozer, SafeWork NSW said.

The rescued worker, in his 30s, was taken to Westmead Hospital with abdominal and shoulder injuries.

"SafeWork is responding to an incident at Eastern Creek today. Safework understands two workers were involved in a bulldozer accident," the agency told 10 daily in a statement.

"One has been fatally injured the other worker has been taken to hospital. SafeWork will be conducting an investigation."

The other workers at the site were sent home, and have been offered counselling.
