Big W To Shut Down All Optical Practices
All 41 Big W Optical stores will close their doors for good by June 30.
Customers nationwide can no longer book an optometrist appointment online, but local stores are still taking phone bookings until Friday June 7.
"We apologise for any inconvenience and would like to take this opportunity to thank you kindly for your support as a valued optical customer," Big W said in a statement.
Health records will be retained by the company in accordance with privacy laws, but customers are able to request that a copy or written summary be sent to another practice.
The decision will affect 175 employees across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia, including optometrists, managers, dispensers and sales staff.
It's understood a small number will be moved to a different department within the Woolworths Group -- the owners of Big W -- others are expected to accept redundancies.
The announcement comes just weeks after the Woolworths Group earmarked dozens of stores for closure.
At least 30 will shut up shop over the next three years, along with two distribution centres.
"They are the most economically-challenged stores in the network from a productivity perspective and have the highest underlying rent costs," Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said at the time.
Details of which stores will close have not been released.
