Mystery Surrounds Empty Canoe Discovered In Queensland

Police are searching for the owner of a canoe that was found off the coast of a Queensland island.

The Candian-style canoe was found drifting near Bribie Island, about 81 kilometres north of Brisbane. Inside the vessel, police found fishing gear including a cast net, a tackle box and a crab dilly.

A blue towel, a maroon towel and a homemade anchor were also found in the boat.

After a search involving Water Police, Volunteer Marine Rescue and the Coast Guard, the owner of the canoe could not be found. Even a helicopter aerial sweep failed to locate anyone.

Police said water drift patterns from the 24 hours before the canoe was found suggests whoever was travelling in the boat came from Bribie Island, Sandstone Point, Deception Bay, Beachmere or Redcliffe areas.

Police are urging anyone who owns the boat or recognises it to contact them.
