Don't Call 000, It's Backburning Smoke

Hazard reduction burning over the weekend by the NSW Rural Fire Service is blanketing Sydney this morning.

The Rural Fire Service began extensive backburning throughout the state in preparation for summer, with controlled fires burning in areas surrounding Sydney.

Fires in the Royal National Park, the Picton area and Colo Heights were started on Friday and many Sydneysiders have woken to the familiar smell of bushfire smoke.

A Rural Fire Service spokesperson told 10 Daily that the Colo Heights and Picton fires are particularly large, which is why the smoke is pushing into Sydney CBD.

The Rural Fire Service has reminded the public to only call Triple Zero if they witness unattended fires and not to call emergency if smoke is simply smelled or seen.
