Man Bitten By Shark At Great Barrier Reef Tourist Hot Spot
A rescue helicopter has been dispatched after a person was reportedly bitten by a shark near the 'heart reef' tourist hotspot off the Queensland coast.
Queensland Ambulance has scrambled a rescue helicopter to respond to a reported shark bite near Hardy Reef -- a Whitsundays coral reef off Airlie Beach, north of Mackay.
A man aged in his 20s suffered a bite to his leg, paramedics said. He has been winched to a helicopter and will be taken to hospital. The victim is said to be in a stable condition.
Hardy Reef is right by the famous Heart Reef, a popular tourist destination with a coral formation in the shape of a heart.
The RACQ rescue helicopter was sent to the location around 2pm on Tuesday.
The helicopter said at 3pm that its crew had "delivered a critical care paramedic and rescue Crewman" to a diving platform at the reef. The victim was winched up to the helicopter.
More to come.
