Police said they may have pre-arranged to travel to the city on public transport.

An extensive police search was conducted on Friday and into the early hours of Saturday morning. Members of the public also volunteered their time to try and find the girls.

"Serious concerns are held for their welfare due to their young age," NSW Police said at the time.

It's still unclear where the girls went after school and why they were in Penrith in the early hours of the morning.
