Cooler conditions and rain have given firefighters a reprieve as they continue to battle bushfires burning across Victoria. The Dargo, Bunyip and Yinnar South blazes remain the biggest concern. At least nine properties have been gutted.

On the west coast, 80 kilometres an hour winds are fanning the flames of an out of control bushfire burning in Perth's northeast. Bullsbrook residents have been told to leave their homes.

An Iraqi asylum seeker has been found dead in his room at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney’s west. He's the second person to die at the complex in less than two months.

People are going wild for a dashing police officer in Western Australia. Police shared a photo of 'hot cop' Senior Constable Paul Ellison on Facebook, asking people not to drink and drive -- but they got a few more responses than they bargained for.

"I've been drinking all night and I'll be on Koombana Bay Road in about 15 minutes," one woman commented. "Bring handcuffs."

More than 10,000 people have commented on the post.

A massive clean-up is underway in the US after two tornadoes tore through Alabama, killing at least 23 people and injuring dozens more.
