WATCH: Cashier Jumps Counter To Escape Hatchet-Wielding Robber
A terrified supermarket worker in Melbourne's inner suburbs was forced to jump over a counter and flee the store when a hatchet-wielding man allegedly confronted him inside.
Police are now hunting for the man they believe told the attendant to get away from the register while brandishing the weapon, before helping himself to cash and cigarettes from the store on Smithfield Road in Kensington.
Security footage released by Victoria Police shows the moment the man walks in wielding the hatchet before the attendant quickly jumps the counter and flees the store.
The alleged thief was confronted by witnesses shortly after leaving the scene at around 7 pm on Sunday when he dropped the stolen cigarettes and fled.
Detectives said they are still investigating the circumstances around the alleged armed robbery, but have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.
