Chaos At Sydney Airport As Flights Delayed For Second Day

Kingsford-Smith is reduced to single-runway operations as strong winds batter the coast for a second day.

Passengers have been left stranded at Sydney Airport with dozens of delayed flights causing chaos inside terminals.

"International and Domestic terminals are experiencing some flight delays," the airport tweeted on Friday morning.

"Due to strong winds, single runway operations are currently in effect. "

Passengers are being urged to contact their individual airlines to check on flight statuses.

"Strong winds in Sydney are affecting a number of flights today," Qantas tweeted.

"Our teams are monitoring the situation and we will advise you if there are any changes to your flight."

Jetstar also issued a statement saying flights had been impacted and said they were monitoring the situation.

"Please ensure your contact details are up to date on your booking so we can advise you if there are any changes to your flight," a statement on their website said.

Virgin Australia said the reduced number of flights was impacting all airlines.

"We're working hard to have guests on their way as quickly and safely as possible," the airline said in a statement.

"We know delays can be frustrating, however your safety is our number one priority."

Frustrated passengers stuck in long queues have taken to social media to vent their frustration with some claiming there have been limited announcements and information on flights.

The Bureau of Meteorology issues a severe weather warning across the state on Friday morning with damaging gusts expected to peak in excess of 90 kilometers per hour over the South Coast, Illawarra, parts of the southern ranges and Central Tablelands, including the upper Blue Mountains.

The damaging winds are being caused by a low pressure system lying to the southeast of Victoria deepening over the southwest Tasman Sea , resulting in an intensification of winds over southeastern New South Wales.

The flight delays are on top of an existing headache for the airport after up to 30 arriving flights and 12 departures were cancelled at the domestic terminal on Thursday evening.
