Red Symons' Son Has Died, Aged 27
Radio personality and former Hey Hey It's Saturday star Red Symons' son has passed away.
A statement from the Symons family read out by 3AW's Neil Mitchell on Wednesday morning confirmed the passing.
"It is with the deepest sadness Red announces the passing of his beautiful son Samuel Symons," the statement said.
"Samuel passed peacefully overnight surrounded by his family. We ask that you please respect the privacy of Red and his family at this very sad and difficult time."
Samuel Symons was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour when he was four years old. At 11, he was operated on for thyroid cancer before developing another brain tumour at 16.
Symons was instrumental in shaping youth cancer services at Melbourne's Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Speaking with Ten Eyewitness News earlier this year, he discussed the importance of a space for patients and their families to come together during treatment.
"The important thing I think, overall, with any treatment is still being able to be you," he said.
He was given a Minister for Health Volunteer Award for his contributions.
