Legendary Australian Swim Coach Ken Wood Dies

Wood coached many Australian champions, including Leisel Jones.

Former Australian swimming coach Ken Wood has died after a short illness, aged 88.

Wood coached many of Australia's champion swimmers, including Leisel Jones, Geoff Huegill, Melissa Gorman and Jessica Schipper. He also trained a number of successful Chinese athletes.

The news was broken by the Australian Swim Coaches and Teachers Association on its Facebook page.

Overall, Wood's swimmers earned over 85 National Champions, 152 Age Group National Championships, 61 international gold medals, and broke 15 individual World Records and 110 Australian Records, according to Swimming World Magazine.

Wood was a member of three Australian Olympic coaching staffs and he coached on 28 Australian Teams, including at the 1984 Olympic Games. He put swimmers on at least four consecutive Australian Olympic Teams from 2000-2012.
