Surfer Rushed To Hospital After Shark Attack 'Through The Bone'

A man has been taken to hospital following a suspected shark attack off a beach in the NSW Illawarra region.

Police said the 59-year-old man was surfing at Windang Beach, south of Wollongong, when he was bitten on the foot on Friday morning.

The man paddled himself to shore where an off-duty lifeguard and other beachgoers rushed to his aid.

Emergency services, including three ambulances and a helicopter, arrived about 8:30am and treated the man for lacerations to his foot, police said.

A spokesman for NSW Ambulance told 10 daily the bite to the man's left foot had "gone through the bone".

Police said the man was taken to Wollongong Hospital and that his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officers are making inquiries with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, but no shark was sighted in the area.

Windang Beach remains open.
