Mother And Son, Five, Killed After Horror Crash With A Truck

A mother and her five-year-old son have died after a truck hit their car in Kingston, Victoria, in a horrific accident that has left the boy's nine-year-old brother in a critical condition.

The truck and car collided at the intersection of Kingston Road and Church Parade -- about 90 minutes north-west of Melbourne -- at 12.20 pm on Sunday.

The mother and son died at the scene, while the woman's other son, nine, was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

Deputy Sargeant Paul Lineham told reporters at the scene the crash was "absolutely devastating".

"This collision was completely and utterly avoidable, " he said.

"We've got a family of four on the road here, we've got two people -- one a child - - who are deceased... these things shouldn't be happening."

The male driver of the car has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A statement from Victoria Police said the driver of the truck was not injured in the tragic accident and is helping police with inquiries.

The road is currently closed in both directions, and anyone travelling in the area is urged to stay away.
