WA Road Signs To Be Written In Mandarin, German And French

Multilingual signs will be trialled on some popular tourist roads in Western Australia in a bid to keep international travellers safe.

Signs with directional arrows and "keep left" written in German, French and Mandarin will first be installed at Indian Ocean Drive, where there have been several deadly head-on crashes.

Directional arrows will also be painted intermittently on the road surface to remind drivers to keep left in Australia.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said crash data from 2014 to 2018 showed international drivers were 35 per cent more likely to be involved in head-on crashes, particularly if they usually drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Other routes to receive the signs will be Minilya-Exmouth Road, Northampton-Kalbarri Road and Burkett Road.
