The Race Is On To Find Out Which Aussie State Has The Best Tap Water

Judges will consider smell, clarity, colour, odour, taste and feel during a series of blindfolded tests at Dunkeld in regional Victoria on Saturday.

Could it be Queensland that best quenches the nation's thirst? Or a glassful from Geelong? Or likely some liquid from Launceston?

The winner will represent Australia at the annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in West Virginia, USA.

The Water Industry Operators Association of Australia will host the 5th Ixom Best Tasting Tap Water in Australia competition, hoping to raise awareness of the work of water operators to make sure the nation has access to clean drinking water.

"The competition is a testament to the excellent quality of Australian water and to the diligence and commitment of the operational employees who deliver it to our communities," the association's chief operations officer Craig Mathisen said.

Despite Australia having one of the most stringent governances of tap water in the world, the country's bottled water industry generates over $700 million annually.
