One Dead, Dozens Evacuated As Fire Rips Through Sydney Unit Block
A man has died after a blaze broke out at an apartment complex in Redfern.
Emergency crews were called to the George Street building at about 4am Friday morning after neighbours reported hearing bangs and screaming.
At least 45 people were evacuated from the surrounding units as firefighters battled the flames.
A 50-year-old man didn't make it out, his body was found leaning against the door of a third-storey unit with burns to 80 percent of his body.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was unable to be revived.
"When [fire fighters] went to the front door of the unit, he was located leaning against the front door so he has obviously tried to escape the unit that was on fire and unfortunately he wasn't able to," Superintendent Andrew Holland said.
Once the building has been declared safe, investigators will move in to determine the cause of the fire.
Local roads remained closed well into the morning.
