Putting Money On Your Opal Card Could Be A Thing Of The Past
Sydney commuters, say goodbye to fumbling around for your Opal card -- your credit card now comes with all the same benefits.
From Monday, public transport users tapping on with their debit card, credit card or phone device will receive the same fare and rewards as Opal cards, the NSW government has announced.
Contactless payment technology was rolled out across the state's trains network late in 2017, but benefits -- including weekly travel discounts and caps -- were reserved for Opal cards.
Now, they're interchangeable.
"From tomorrow, the weekly travel reward, the transfer discount and off-peak pricing will be available for all contactless transport payments, " NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said on Sunday.
"This is a huge win for regular commuters who now have another convenient payment option with all the benefits of Opal."
Constance also announced contactless transport payments will be rolled out to Opal-enabled buses from next month.
'Launching this technology on buses marks the final piece in the contactless payments puzzle," he said.
All buses on the Opal network are expected to be accepting credit and debit cards by the end of September.
