Hundreds Camp Out In The Cold For 'Crazy Cheap' $20 'Book Of Mormon' Tickets
Adelaide's overnight temperature dropped to seven degrees, but that didn't stop 500 hundred people camping out for a chance to see one of the world's most popular musicals for a bargain price.
After waiting for 12 hours, Anja, 21, was the first person to buy a ticket - scoring a front row seat for just $20.
"I've been waiting a couple of years to see the show," she told 10 News First on Thursday.
"So cheap! I can't believe it, it's crazy! "
Luckily, for those in the queue behind her, there were plenty of seats to go around, with 2,000 tickets available for opening night.
Adelaide tickets normally sell for as much as $220, with seats in Perth going for up to $250 and in Brisbane for as much as $260.
"I'm very broke so I would never have been able to afford this unless it was $20," one fan told 10 News First.
"$20, it's pretty neat, it's definitely worth waiting," said another.
Show organisers say it's a unique opportunity for fans to experience a world class show at an affordable price.
"It's pretty rare that people get to buy $20 tickers for a big broadway blockbuster, but we do this everywhere in the world," said publicist Ian Phipps.
"The creators of the show, the guys from South Park, Matt and Trey, want their fans to be able to be able to afford to come and see the show."
He describes the show as the "funniest and filthiest night out" and encourages even non-theatre lovers to consider coming along. It follows the the story of two Mormon missionaries who attempt to preach their religion in Uganda.
Entertaining audiences since 2011, the musical has won nine Tony Awards and been performed in theatres worldwide.
After it's broadway debut, the show moved to London's West End in 2013, and finally arrived in Australia in 2017, opening in Melbourne in January before moving to Sydney the following month.
Theatre website Playbill estimates the show has grossed over $500 million, making it one of the most lucrative and successful musicals of all time.
The Book Of Mormon opens in Adelaide on June 25, before heading to Perth in September, and Brisbane in January 2020.
