The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader have clashed on climate change, child care, negative gearing and free speech in their final debate before the election. While Scott Morrison was trying to pick holes in Labor’s policies, Bill Shorten played on the instability of the government. An elderly man has died in a suspected hit-and-run in Melbourne’s north-west. The man, 78, was struck while he was getting on or off a bus in St Albans just after nine o'clock last night. Police said the driver didn’t stop and is yet to be found.

One person has been killed after a crash involving up to eight cars and a truck on Sydney's M4 motorway. All citybound lanes were closed at the approach to Church Street in Mays Hill just before 6am, causing traffic chaos. There were still 15-kilometre queues at 8am.

Chris Dawson's murder case will return to court today. The former teacher is accused of killing his wife, Lynette Dawson, on Sydney's northern beaches 37 years ago. Today's mention could reveal whether material collected for the podcast Teachers Pet can be used as evidence.

A dead man has been elected mayor of Maypearl, Texas. Philip Veltman, 71, died on March 15 from complications relating to leukaemia, but it was too late to remove him from the May 4 ballot. Veltman managed to win the election with 62 percent of the votes. It will now be up to the city council to appoint someone else as mayor.

The US president has used his executive powers for the first time, to block the release of the Mueller report on Russian election interference. It comes as a Democratic-led US congressional panel moved towards holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt for refusing to hand over the document.
