The Sinister Story Behind A Courtroom Moment That Became Fodder For Funny Memes
Jawad Bendaoud's gruff exterior had Twitter users in stitches this past week -- until the real reason for his bad-tempered attitude was revealed.
The 32-year-old became a social media sensation after footage of his surly walk outside a French courtroom recently went viral.
While the oft-shared video snippet was perfect material for light-hearted laughs, the story behind it turned out to be way more menacing.
Bendaoud was found guilty last month of sheltering two men who participated in the 2015 Paris terror attacks.
Bendaoud was jailed for harbouring reported ISIS members Abdelhamid Abaaoud and Chakib Akrouh, who were behind the suicide bombings and mass shootings around Paris that killed 130 people and injured many more.
Clad in a black tracksuit with gold accents, Bendaoud's impenetrable frosty glare as he exited the courtoom quickly became fodder for social media.
Initially cleared during his first trial in 2018, Bendaoud was sentenced on appeal to four years in prison.
The Paris Court of Appeal's verdict came after the prosecution argued Bendaoud had given shelter to Abaaoud and Akrouh at his north Paris flat.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the 2015 stadium, bar and restaurant attacks in Paris, as well as the Bataclan concert venue on November 13.
When pleading his innocence, Bendaoud stated: "Someone asked me for a favour, I helped them out."
