Prisoner Shot Dead After Allegedly Trying To Escape From Hospital

A 43-year-old  man who was shot by prison officers while under their guard at a NSW hospital, has died.

Police were called to Lismore Base Hospital at 7.30pm on Friday following reports of a shooting.

They found a man critically injured after being shot by Corrective Services’ officers while allegedly attempting to escape.

Police are appealing for witnesses and dash-cam vision as investigations continue.

The inmate received immediate treatment by paramedics but later died, a spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW said.

Two Corrective Services officers are assisting with inquiries, NSW Police said.

No hospital staff or patients were harmed, a spokesperson from Northern NSW Health District said in a statement.

"Lismore Base Hospital staff have been offered counselling and support and patients who were in the ED at the time of the incident are being contacted today to check on their welfare,"  Acting Chief Executive Lynne Weir said.
