Ten people have been charged and another 10 taken to the hospital at a music festival in Sydney’s west. Police searched 400 people at the Ultra Music Festival on Sunday, where 10 people were charged with supplying prohibited drugs. Another 66 people were removed from the festival.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to unveil a $2 billion funding boost for climate change. The cash will be used to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions and fund the ‘Emissions Reduction Fund’ that was started by Tony Abbott in 2014.
Two Victorian Police officers have been rushed to hospital after being violently attacked in a St Kilda street. Six people allegedly set upon the two officers, knocking them to the ground and leaving one needing emergency shoulder surgery. The other’s head was smashed on the pavement. Victoria Police are hunting the alleged attackers.
Two Australians have been named as favourites at the 91st Academy Awards in Hollywood. Fiona Crombie and Tony McNamara are nominated for their work on the film ‘The Favourite’. The awards are set to start midday Australian time.
Authorities are still working to determine how an 11-metre-long whale ended up dead in the Amazon Jungle. The whale was found on the island of Marajo in Brazil's north, a region where the rainforest meets the sea. Biologists rushed to find the carcass of the huge animal after a video of it appeared online. The scientists raced to get to the animal before it started to decompose so samples could be taken. They hope the samples might possess clues as to how the animal washed up in the forest, many metres inland from the sea.
Pope Francis has called for the end of child sexual abuse at the close of a Vatican summit on the issue. He appealed for an ‘all-out battle’ on clergy sex abuse but the meeting has been criticised for failing to decide ways to resolve the crisis.
British Prime Minister Theresa May has delayed a final Brexit vote in a last-ditch effort to get the deal passed. The vote is scheduled for March 12, just 17 days before the UK is set to leave the European Union. Pressure is mounting on May as the EU has refused further negotiation talks.
