Former Footballer Fatally Shot Over Parking Spot Dispute

A former NFL player and father-of-four is dead after being shot three times in a parking lot dispute.

Anthony "TJ" Cunningham, 46, was an assistant school principal in Aurora, Colorado, and a former NFL player with the Seattle Seahawks.

He died in the parking lot of Eaglecrest High School on Sunday morning after an ongoing dispute with a neighbour turned violent.

The suspect was identified as Marcus Johnson, 31. Johnson has a criminal history that includes assault and a weapons possession charge.

Arapahoe County sheriff’s spokeswoman Deborah Sherman said the incident started as an ongoing dispute between Cunningham and Johnson over a parking spot in their neighbourhood.

Police say Johnson got a gun and shot Cunningham multiple times. He then called the police to surrender.

Close friend Thomas Major told CBS4 in Denver that the local community had lost "such a great person, such a great soul".

"You can honestly say that you never had a bad memory around TJ. His aura and his persona was constantly positive," Major said.

His former university described him as a "tremendous part of the community".
