Storms Take Out Power For 30k Sydney Homes

More than 30,000 properties were left without power after an intense thunderstorm dumped nearly 50mms of rain on some Sydney suburbs.

Emergency services rescued nine people from floods after Parramatta, Auburn and Baulkham Hills all received more than 1mm a minute for half-an-hour.

Forty-seven millimetres of rain fell on Guildford within 30 minutes.

Endeavour Energy said 26,500 homes were left without power while Ausgrid said at least 7,600 homes in the city's east and north were in the dark for reasons including fallen lines.

"Never approach fallen wires, always assume they're live, stay at least 8 metres away and report them to us on 131388," Ausgrid said in a statement.

The State Emergency Services (SES) received 509 calls, but most of the calls were for damage to roofs as well as fallen trees, SES acting coordinator duty operations, Stacey Phillips, told the ABC.

Nine people had to be rescued from flash flooding.
