A man has died after he was mauled by a shark in Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island on Monday afternoon. The 33-year-old suffered serious injuries to his left thigh, right calf and left wrist and was taken to Mackay Base Hospital where he later died after suffering massive blood loss. The attack comes after two tourist were attacked by a shark in the same area in September.

Melbourne Cup day has arrived with people around the country poised to stop at 3pm to watch the big race. A train has been deliberately derailed by BHP after it travelled 92 kilometres without a driver. The fully-laden train made up of four locomotives and 268 wagons was travelling from Newman to Port Headland in at 4.40am on Monday morning when the driver hopped out to inspect a wagon near Hester siding. The train rolled off before the driver could get back on board and travelled for about 50 minutes before it was stopped. BHP is investigating the incident and will interview the driver.

Voters across America head to the polls on Tuesday to vote in the first major elections since Donald Trump took office. It's an important election because Trump's Republicans currently hold the control in both houses of US Congress but the midterms could see the Democrats wrestle back the power in at least one chamber. The Lion Air plane that crashed into the Java Sea last week had been experiencing technical problems with its airspeed indicator investigators have said. The gauge had malfunctioned on the plane's final four flights. The cockpit voice recorder hasn't been found and investigators say it might never be discovered due to the speed at which the plane crashed.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather will fight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan after signing a deal with a mixed martial arts company. The fight is due to take place on December 31 but the format and the rules of the contest are yet to be decided. Mayweather, the former five-weight world champion beat UFC's Conor McGregor in a boxing match in August 2017 where he extend his perfect record to 50 wins.

Ariana Grande has admitted she is in "constant pain" when she has her hair up in her iconic ponytail. Over the weekend, Camila Cabello thought she might channel her inner Grande and tried out the hair style but conceded she couldn't handle the pain in her roots. Grande also said while she is in pain she doesn't "care at all". No pain, no gain ... right?

A fisherman in New Zealand has saved a toddler from the ocean after spotting the child floating face-down in the water. Gus Hutt found the baby on October 26 in Matata in New Zealand's north. "His face looked just like porcelain with his short hair wetted down, but then ... he let out a little squeak and I thought, 'Oh God this is a baby and it's alive,'" Hutt told the New Zealand Herald. It is thought the child roamed away from his parent's tent, who were camping near-by.
