The singer passed away on Thursday surrounded by family in home in Detroit, US.
The late singer's last performance was in 2017 at Elton's John's AIDS Foundation where she looked frail.
During her final days she was visited by her ex husband and the Rev Jesse Jackson. Artists such as Beyoncé dedicated performances to her during her final days.
People across the globe have taken to social media to express their gratitude and love for the icon.
She had been receiving hospice care at home in her final days.
The singer had been plagued with health problems over recent years and had lost all three siblings to cancer.
Born to a preacher father and a piano player mother in Memphis Tennessee the singer became a reckoning force in the music industry. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
She won eighteen Grammys and was awarded the presidential Medal Of Freedom in 2005.
