The federal government's full controversial tax plan passed parliament on Thursday after the Coalition gained the crossbench support it needed. The plan will come into affect on July 1, where low-to-middle income earners will received a tax break of up to $530. By 2024-2025 high income earners will get a break meaning 94 percent of the nation will be paying no more than 32.5 percent tax. Find out what the new tax plan means for you here.

The Socceroos' World Cup hopes are still alive after drawing with Denmark 1-1. The Danes were off to a quick start, scoring early in the first half, but Australia managed to reply with a goal of their own just before half time. While Australia didn't manage all three goals they needed to secure a spot in the knock-out round, their up-coming game against Peru means they still have a chance to qualify.

Meanwhile France has qualified for the final 16 after beating Peru 1-0. Peru has been eliminated from the Cup after two successive losses. The final spot in group C will be filled by either Australia or Denmark.

Melania Trump has travelled to Texas to visit a detention facility where migrant children separated from their families are being held. A spokeswoman for Melania said she planned the trip herself after becoming deeply concerned about her husband's policy. "The images struck her, as a mother, as a human being,"Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told reporters. Trump herself said during the visit that she wants to learn about how she can help workers at the detention centres reunite children with their families as soon as possible. Melania's controversial fashion choice during the visit has sparked an uproar across social media.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a baby girl. The PM posted a photo on Instagram of her, partner Clarke Gayford and their new arrival. She wrote that the baby arrived at 4.45pm and weighed 3.31 kilograms but a name is yet to be revealed. Ardern is the second woman in history to give birth while in office.

Koko the gorilla, who was famous for knowing sign language, has died aged 46. The Gorilla Foundation said the beloved creature died in her sleep on Tuesday. Dr Francine Patterson started teaching Koko sign language in 1974 and according to Patterson, Koko was able to understand more than 1,000 signs. Koko's ability to break the barriers between human and animal communication captured the hearts of the world.

Florida Police have confirmed they have arrested a man in their investigation into the shooting death of rapper XXXTentacion. Police said they  22-year-old Dedrick Devonshay Williams on Thursday. The 20-year-old XXXTentacion was allegedly shot by two people at a motor sports dealership on Monday.

John Oliver's content has been blocked or removed from Chinese social media after a segment on his show about Chinese leader Xi Jinping. While Last Week Tonight is not broadcast in China, clips from the show appeared on video-steaming sites and attracted comments on social media. Users of Weibo -- the Chinese version of Twitter-- discovered this when they were unable to post anything relating to Oliver. Users also received a message informing them that anything relating to John Oliver was a "violation of regulations".

Masterchef certainly was full of surprises on Thursday evening, seeing fan-favourite Aldo take his leave from the competition, only to be replaced by former contestant Brendan. Previously eliminated contestants were invited back to the kitchen for one last cook, where they had the chance to sizzle, sear or sautee their way back into the competition. And Antarctic expeditioners at the Casey Station have taken part in the annual dip into minus two degree waters to celebrate midwinter. The team at the station used a chainsaw to cut through the ice to create a makeshift pool where the icy event took place. 21 of the 26 people working at the station were brave enough to take the plunge.
