'I Was Crying The Whole Way Home': The Outfit Kim Kardashian West Was Criticised For Most
When it comes to Kim Kardashian West's outfits, most of the time you either love them or hate them.
And reflecting on some of her most iconic looks, Kardashian West is one of the first to admit her fashion choices are divisive.
Yet prior to attending her first Met Gala in 2013 and while also being pregnant with her first child with Kanye West, North, Kardashian West felt more vulnerable than ever.
"I was very pregnant, very puffy and bloated. I was like, of course the first time I go [to the Met Gala] I'm going to be huge," she during an interview with Vogue.
"Kanye was performing, so I wasn't actually invited. I was just Kanye's plus one and that was okay with me because I never dreamed I would be at the Met Ball."
Despite Kim now being a staple at the invite-only event, she said at the time, she felt like no one probably really wanted her to be there.
She was dressed by then-Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as he was dressing Kanye and together they chose a 'really stretchy fabric' for her gown as they knew she would be growing and changing during her pregnancy.
"We wanted to make sure alterations were easy and I would be comfortable," she said.
We have a black version of this and the floral version of this and I was like: 'I think we should just do the black version' and Ricardo was like: 'No we have to do the floral.'
Despite not being personally sold on the floral print, Kim was particularly taken aback by a comment Riccardo made about the meaning of the gown.
"Ricardo said afterwards: 'What do you give a woman when she's pregnant? You send her flowers.' It was such a sweet message of how Ricardo described it," she said.
"But I was so insecure and I could never really speak up at that point because I was so shy and just wanted to make everyone happy. He said Anna [Wintour] really wanted to floral so I said: 'Okay, floral it is.'"
On the car ride to the Met Gala, Kardashian West reflected on how happy her husband Kayne West was, telling her how beautiful she looked. But following the event, things took a turn on the way home.
"Then I was crying, like, the whole way home because I just couldn't believe it," Kardashian West said.
"There were just all these memes about me and this couch and I think, like, Robin Williams even tweeted it and said I look like Mrs Doubtfire so then I just cried."
But now reflecting on the outfit choice, Kardashian West said she feels differently.
"But now I look back on it and I'm like: 'This is sick.' Like wow, they had the vision," she said.
"I just remember the Olsen twins came up to me and loved my outfit and my gloves and so none of the critics mattered because the Olsen twins approved and I loved it."
If it has a tick from the Olsen twins, we guess nothing else really matters.
