Billy Porter Rocked A Recycled Theatre Curtain From 'Kinky Boots' At The Tony Awards

Billy Porter has done it again, the star of stage and screen wearing a very visible memento from his time playing Lola in the Broadway smash hit, 'Kinky Boots'.

Instead of wearing a boring suit to the Tony Awards, Porter wore a custom Elizabethan-style gown made from the red velvet curtain that was raised and lowered on approximately 1,150 performances at the Al Hirschfield theatre.

According to the New York Times, the gown was created after 'Kinky Boots' ended its Broadway run in 2018 and handbag company Scenery Bags bought the production's curtain.

The company pitched the idea of turning the fabric into a bag to Porter's stylist, Sam Ratelle, who had an even grander idea.

Ratelle contacted Mexican couturiers Sergio Guadarrama and Cade Johnson (Celestino Couture) who produce impressive creations from upcycled fabric to create Porter's look for the Tony Awards.

Porter -- who also stars in Ryan Murphy's 'Pose' and 'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' -- told the NYT he wants to " flip the question of what it means to be a man".

“This question of masculinity, this sort of microscope of heteronormative masculinity that we are very often held up to, especially as leading men, needs to be shattered," he said.

"You know, it’s toxic and I’m over it and I’ve lived it and I’m not doing it anymore.”

Porter has been doing exactly that on every major red carpet in the last 12 months, turning heads at the Met Gala, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards with his stunning outfits.

Ratelle told the NYT it was important to make the distinction that Porter's expressions of masculinity through his outfits are very different from drag and his 'Kinky Boots' character, Lola.

"He’s not a drag queen. He’s a man in a dress," Ratelle said.

"We don’t want to confuse people, because he actually is not a drag queen. One day he might want to wear a dress, one day he might not.”
