Katy Perry Says She's 'Saddened' By Blackface Shoe Claims
Two department stores pulled shoes from Katy Perry's range after racism claims.
Katy Perry has removed two items from her new shoe range after complaints their designs were racist.
The singer has also spoken out about the allegations, saying she is "saddened" that the design -- which features blue eyes and red lips on a black background -- were compared with images of blackface.
Perry says the shoes, The Rue and The Ora, were "envisioned as a nod to modern art and surrealism".
"I was saddened when it was brought to my attention that it was being compared to painful images reminiscent of blackface," Perry said in a statement.
Our intention was never to inflict any pain. We have immediately removed them.
The shoes were supposed to be sold as part of her Katy Perry Collections range at US retailers like Dillard's and Walmart, but have now been taken off the shelves by a number of stores.
This isn't the only time in recent weeks that the fashion industry has had to apologise for similar imagery. In fact, this comes less than a week after Gucci pulled and apologised for a jumper featuring similar bright red lips.
Prada also came under fire for their "Pradamalia" keychains and other trinkets -- which included a character with black skin and oversized red lips. After outrage spread online, Prada released a statement saying it was nixing the "characters in question" saying "Prada group abhors racist imagery."
The Pradamalia are fantasy charms composed of elements of the Prada oeuvre. They are imaginary creatures not intended to have any reference to the real world and are certainly not blackface.
"Prada Group never had the intention of offending anyone and we abhor all forms of racism and racist imagery. In this interest, we will withdraw the characters in question from display and circulation."
There have been other examples too -- Moncler had to pull a jacket featuring the face of a character they say was a penguin after they were accused of racism in 2016.
In January 2018, H&M released an ad featuring a black child modelling a green hooded sweatshirt featuring the phrase "coolest monkey in the jungle."
Social media users vowed to stop shopping at the retail giant while others blasted marketing executives for approving the image. H&M then apologised and removed the item from their website.
