Amal Clooney Is Our Hero Right Now
Even if she can't stop gushing about her husband... old thingamybobs.
Okay we're telling it like it is right now. We believe Amal Clooney can do no wrong and not even a sickeningly sweet speech at her husband's Lifetime Achievement Award celebration on Thursday in Hollywood can change that.
Lambasted by some for her words about hubby -- his name, by the way, is George -- at the event, no one can deny that the woman has poise and elegance by the bucketload AND that while he got the award on the night, she is by far the more formidable of the two when it comes to achievements -- the human rights lawyer has taken on ISIS, for goodness sake. Amal has represented a whole host of high-profile clients -- from former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange - and used her human-rights expertise to advocate for the cases of imprisoned journalists and Yazidi women abused under ISIS.
We'll get to that speech in a moment, but first let's talk about how she's also complete style goals. It's all about balance, right?
We never thought we'd want to wear a lolly-pink Barbie dress but now we can't think why we wouldn't. Prada and Amal together certainly changed our minds on that one.
Amal and her husband who have been married for nearly 4 years, had spent the weeks before the big event holed up in Italy, where they celebrated their twins Ella and Alexander's first birthday -- and once again our girl NAILED it in a vintage Ossie Clark maxi dress for a night out, and Gucci sunnies and braided roman sandals by day. All hail her. Hubby chose to complement her in blue slacks and a polo shirt for dinner, dad jeans and desert boots for a motorbike ride.
Of course, before their Italian getaway the lawyer and her actor husband -- you may remember him from ER -- were guests at Harry and Meghan's royal wedding where Amal slayed in sunshine yellow Stella McCartney. George wore a suit. I think it was grey.
And of course there was her daring Met Gala outfit back at the start of May -- the work of London based designer, Richard Quinn. Heavenly bodies indeed.
Back to the award night for a moment -- and the moment Amal made an emotional and touching speech about her husband. There wasn't a dry eye in the house (including George's) when she spoke about his achievements, and about their relationship.
"Here are a few things you may not know about George. First, he is a gentleman," she began. "He is a gentleman in every sense of the word and in a way that seems so rare these days and perhaps even outdated. Everyone who knows him, even those who oppose him politically or who have quarrelled with him professionally, will tell you, he has not forgotten his Kentucky manners.
"On every set I visit, I’m told by the crew that George sticks up for the most vulnerable. His security team told me that when shooting [Confessions of a Dangerous Mind] in Montreal, George refused to wear a warm winter jacket unless every actor got the same one even though it was 40 degrees below zero."
She went on to talk about their meeting and falling in love -- and this is the part she got a bit of backlash for because apparently, when you're as successful as Amal is, you can't talk about love and how great you find your husband of only a few years.
"I met George when I was 35 and starting to become quite resigned to the idea that I was going to be a spinster. Then we met and started hiding out in my London flat and very soon it felt like, no matter what happened, I would never want to be with anyone else," she said.
"I couldn’t sleep when we were apart and I’m told that I would display a particular grin and head-tilt when reading his text messages or the letters he would hide in my bag. Five years later, none of that has changed. He is the person who has my complete admiration and also the person whose smile makes me melt every time. My love, what I have found with you is the great love I always hoped existed. And seeing you with our children, Ella and Alexander, is the greatest joy in my life."
While we can kinda understand the criticism -- after all she is one of the most deservedly successful women of our times in her own right -- surely it's totally acceptable for someone in the public eye to talk so openly about love and have a good old public gush about their partner if she wants to. Romance isn't dead and surely we shouldn't try and kill it off all together. Regardless of how much a woman eclipses her husband's achievements with her own ... amiright?
Whoever he is.
Just kidding George. We love you too.
