'Disgusting And Putrid': Abbie Breaks Down As Hate Is Hurled After 'The Bachelor' Finale
On top of having her heart broken on national television, 'The Bachelor' star Abbie Chatfield has revealed she's also dealing with shocking abuse over social media.
Speaking to 10 daily, the 23-year-old opened up about the wave of criticism she's received over her actions on the show, saying that the backlash against her is beginning to take its toll.
"It's been rough. I think people were just confronted by a woman owning her sexuality on TV and I think Australia has a long way to go when it comes to that," she said.
"If anyone's saying that I'm 'disgusting' or when people are calling me a 'putrid dog', if anything, I feel like it comes down to internalised misogyny."
"I can't really help that and it's actually quite upsetting to know that that's how our society as a whole deals with this," Abbie continued.
Much of the criticism towards Abbie has stemmed from her sexually confident behaviour towards Bachelor Matt Agnew -- with the backlash soon becoming so vicious that host Osher Günsberg publicly backed the reality star over Twitter.
"I've been doing this job a while now. Tweeting every episode that goes to air," he wrote. "I am always interested to see how a strong woman powerfully expressing her sexuality makes so many people so uncomfortable."
Speaking about her infamous beach make-out scene, Abbie said: "I didn't even think this was going to be a topic can be spoken about, to be honest."
When I was with Matt, the thing I remember most is how much fun we had and how much we laughed. It wasn't really our sexual chemistry -- and by the way, I don't ever want to hear that phrase again my life! Oh, my God, I've heard it enough.
Appearing on Studio 10 on Friday -- the morning after the finale aired -- Abbie elaborated on the nasty comments she's received from trolls over social media.
She became emotional as she described how difficult the hate against her has been, while simultaneously still dealing with the pain of being dumped by Matt.
"I've been getting a lot of horrible DMs," she told the hosts. "I've got a few threats of violence, saying -- 'Your mother shouldn't have had you' -- those sort of things just hundreds of times a day".
"This is on top of being heartbroken."
