The World's Best Airlines For 2020 Have Been Named

Clear for takeoff.

Air New Zealand has taken out the top spot once again, being titled the best airline in 2020. It's the sixth time the airline has beat out its competition for the number one position.

The ranking was released as part of the Airline Excellence Awards which places airlines on the list according to 12 key criteria such as fleet age, passenger reviews, profitability, investment rating, product offerings and staff relations.

“In our analysis, Air New Zealand came out number one in most of our audit criteria, which is an outstanding performance when it’s up against carriers with more resources and scale on this same list of best airlines for 2020," Airline Ratings editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said.

Air New Zealand’s commitment to excellence in all facets of its business starts at the top with outstanding governance and one of the best executive teams in aviation through to a workforce that is delivering consistently to the airline’s strategy and customer promise.

Air New Zealand took the top position back from last year's winner Singapore Airlines, who placed second this year.

Japan's All Nippon Airways took third place, being praised for its cabin innovation and Qantas sits at number four.

Jetstar's new 14kg carry-on option is now in line with Qantas, but travelers shouldn't rejoice too soon.

In addition to naming the top 20 airlines, the rating also gives out 13 additional award categories.

Air New Zealand further picked up the title of the Best Premium Economy while Singapore Airlines was named the Best First Class.
