Former Bachelor Contestant Emily Simms Rushed To Emergency After Giving Birth

Emily Simms gave birth to her first baby at 33 weeks, making the arrival of her daughter seven weeks premature.

The former 'Bachelor' star, 36, gave birth on Wednesday and said her baby is doing fine, while she is being treated for pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome.

"Laila Belle Ghougassian, born 03.07.19, at 2:24pm, weighing 2.022kg. (Pronounced Lay-La)," she wrote, announcing the arrival of her daughter on Instagram.

"Baby is doing well and has been moved out of ICU and into the special care nursery as of today."

The makeup artist, who shares Laila was her partner Pierre Ghougassian, said she however, isn't doing so well following the birth.

"Mum is not doing so great, with severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, and is in the critical care unit," she continued.

"Thanks for everyone’s messages of love and support. Laila is simply gorgeous and we are so smitten!"

Pre-eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterised by high maternal blood pressure, and protein in the urine, according to Better Health.

It is the most common serious medical complication of pregnancy, affecting around five-to-eight percent of all pregnancies in Australia, and tends to occur most in first pregnancies.

One-to-two percent of cases are severe enough to threaten the lives of both the mother and her unborn child.

Symptoms include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting

If left untreated, pre-eclampsia can lead to serious problems including fitting or convulsions, kidney failure, liver failure, clotting problems or death.

HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelet count) is a syndrome that usually develops after pre-eclampsia and can be life threatening.

Babies that weigh under 2.5kg may need help breathing and may require caring for in an intensive care unit (ICU) until they've developed further.

Laila spent the first day after her birth in ICU before being taken to a special care unit, given she is just under the weight of 2.5kg and may require further care until she is developed further.

Emily's baby shower was scheduled for last Friday, but instead she was forced to get medical help.

"After being in hospital now with diagnosed pre-eclampsia since Friday last week, feeling like death, not being able to make it to my baby shower last Sunday, and just trying to keep her in for a bit longer, it's been emotionally and physically really difficult (to say the least)," she wrote on Instagram.

"But thank God I have this guy. I've fallen in love with my husband so much more over the last week. He's been by my side almost every minute."

Pierre attended Emily's baby shower in her absence.

Emily appeared on Sam Woods' season of The Bachelor in 2015 and married her real estate agent partner in August 2018 after a year of dating.
