The Best Hot Cross Buns Have Been Ranked And It's Bad News If You're Gluten-Free
It's a battle of the buns so who came out on top?
It's serious business when it comes to deciding which hot cross buns are worthy of your taste buds.
With so many bakeries and supermarkets selling them, as well as the variety of flavours available to choose from, no one wants to risk getting a bad bun.
Luckily, consumer watchdog Choice have done all of the hard (read: tasty) work for us. Their team blind taste tested 15 hot cross buns across a number of varieties: including traditional fruit, choc chip and gluten free.
A number of major supermarket chains such as Coles, Woolworths and Aldi as well as bakery chains Bakers Delight, Brumby's were put to the test. If you happen to have a membership to Costco, their buns were also sampled too.
Hybrid hot cross bun treats have been growing in popularity, with Coles releasing lamington hot cross buns as well as hot cross bun flavoured popcorn, while Woolworths have partnered with Cadbury and Darrell Lea for a new spin on theirs.
However according to Choice, consumers can't go past a traditional fruit hot cross bun as their favourite. So which is the best? The below products each stored 70 percent or more in taste testing:

The best gluten-free hot cross buns
Overall, gluten-free buns sadly scored poorly when taste tested, all four versions tested not scoring well. But when you can't eat gluten, having an option there might be better than nothing, right?
Both Coles' Gluten Free Fruit Hot Cross Buns and Woolworths' Free From Gluten Choc Hot Cross Buns only scored 56 percent.
Of the bottom of the bunch were Woolworths' Free From Glutent Fruit Hot Cross Buns at 53 percent while Coles' Gluten Free Chocolate Hot Cross Buns were the worst of the lot and the only to score under 50 percent, at 49 percent.
Better luck next year?
